August 2004
Sunday August 1
On Sunday I decided to try and take photos of the cranes (birds) in the field close to campus. Of course I scared them all away quickly and they didn't come back. A small group stayed but they were too far away for good pictures.
So I stayed in the field for a while and took other photos before going home.
Saturday August 7
Fridaynight my parents came back to Fairbanks after their trip, they had a good time! On Saturday we decided to visit the Botanical Garden of the university. They visited the one in Anchorage, but were disappointed. The one in Fairbanks is very nice!
After that I wanted to show them Creamers Field, because there are so many cranes there at this moment! It was very nice, although the cranes were too far away for good pictures with the digital camera.
After a detour (I am soooo good in finding my way in Fairbanks) we found the Walmart, where we took this picture of tshirts that are SO big, they were like 4 times XL or something!!
Sunday August 8
The next day we decided to go for a drive, and we drove to Poker Flat Research Range. There is not much to see since you cannot enter the terrain without a guide and there are no guided tours because of the fires. Anyway, here are some pictures of the entrance:
The border of the forest fire is close to here, and I wanted to see it. It was impressive, all this dead forest... quite sad. But new life is starting already, there was grass growing everywhere.
We had become quite hungry so we stopped for lunch at the Chatanika lodge next to the road. We had a nice lunch and my dad watched the Nascar car races on tv.
We were very close to Skiland, and I wanted to show it to my parents. Of course we got lost first, I couldn't find my way there without snow ;)
But we found it eventually, it was so strange to see this place in Summer! Actually it was beautiful, there were flowers everywhere. On some of the photos you can see the Poker Flat Research Range in the distance, the white buildings surrounded by burnt forest...
Wednesday August 11
After work I visited the fire station with my parents, Brandon gave us a tour! It was very interesting and the fire alarm went off while we were there so we got to see how that works as well.
Thursday August 12
In the morning Mihailo and me brought my parents to the railway station. At night, I went to the State Fair at night with Diana and her family. This is THE event in Fairbanks, it lasts 10 days and it's mainly about food ;) It was a busy night since you could go in for free if you donated 4 cans of food.
Friday August 13
On Friday the 13th of August I had my goodbye party... Not only for me, there were more people about to leave as well. Even Nicole and her husband came, it was a really nice party!
Here's a picture of me, the two Chinese guys that are leaving too, Muna from Bangladesh and Nicole and Gerrhard.
Saturday August 14
On Saturday I went to the fair again, with Diana and Muna. We were volunteering for the Iarc boot on the fair, and in turn got a free ticket for the whole day.
We took a ride on the ferris wheel, it was funny cause both Muna and Diana were scared, and Diana didn't understand how Muna and me could be in front of her sometimes and behind her at other times haha...
Then it was time for us to man the IARC stand. It was fun! People asked interesting questions and we had nice stuff to give away. We also had two tornado-in-a-bottle s, that draw the attention of every kid.
And of Diana, she played with them endlessly!
I took some photos of the fair by night, something I have always wanted to try! It worked out quite well...
It was the last night of the fair, so there were fireworks at 11PM! It was really nice, I took a lot of slides.
Wednesday August 18
During the last few days I finished my report and printed it for everyone. Then on Wednesday I had to give a seminar! My first seminar in English.. I was nervous, but luckily I lost that before I started. It went really well, there were a lot of people and they asked good questions.
Everybody told me I did such a good job :) So I was very happy, it was a good ending of my internship! After I had to go home to pack everything, I had to leave my room. Honie and Precious helped me packing. I was going to stay in Mihailo's room for the last two nights.
Thursday August 19
On Thursday I took care of the last things, like getting my deposit back from housing, closing my bank account... We went for lunch at the Roasting Company (where else!), and Nicole and Gerhard came as well.
It was so nice... the food was great and the company too.
Friday August 20
On Friday we woke up really early, my flight would leave at 6 AM. Brandon and Mihailo took me to the airport. It was a very smokey morning (see the pictures, it's SMOKE and not mist...), I was glad I was going to leave that behind!
