June 2004

I was travelling through Alaska for most of June, see the seperate trip report!

Monday June 28
Monday was a terrible day! I woke up with the taste of smoke in my mouth, feeling sick. The wind turned yesterday, and now we have the smoke of the bush fires over Fairbanks. I felt so sick, and even dizzy. I decided to go to work, hoping there were air filters in the airco there... On the way I took these photos:

Unfortunately it was smokey inside the IARC building as well, it was even foggy! Nobody was able to work very hard, we mainly talked about the smoke, everybody had a hard time with it. The concentration is 1000 mg/m3, while the treshold for healthy air lies at 65 mg/m3!!

Tuesday June 29
On Tuesday I didn't wake up sick anymore, that was good, I am getting used to it apparently. According to the forecasts we will have this smoke for the rest of this week! Not a very nice thing.... I took these photos while walking home (not a very healty thing to do!), the sun is still hidden behind the smoke!

Wednesday June 30
On Wednesday it seemed to get worse... and it got a strange yellowish color. It didn't feel good when breathing in, it made me cough. More and more people are wearing masks now, even inside the building. Mihailo and I went outside for a little while for this photo shoot...

Brandon told us the fires got a lot worse, and Poker Flat Research Range is threatened. Many people had to evacuate. The fire moved 35 miles in just 2 hours! It seems to get out of hand, hopefully the weather will change soon.
